Blue Series (2008-2014)
At the very beginning stage of my work, I made The Blue of Liverpool (Oil on canvas, 122 x 179 cm, 2009). For the varieties of choices in colours, I have my special taste of blue. I even imagine blue could ease my soul and comfort me, no matter it is sky blue, cerulean blue or navy blue which always been utilized on my oeuvres. Here, The Blue of Liverpool is my first painting I started to consider of relationship between the colours and me. The theme of this painting memorized the first time I had rooted in the British summer. At the moment, I was living in Surrey, the southeast countryside of England, and it was my first oversea journey in my life so far. I had spent my whole summer there in 2008. I was fascinated by the late sunset at around 10am, and I really wanted to capture the stunning cobalt blue colour in between sunset and evening, which is the perfect mixture colour of red, purple and blue.
Things had happened from a romantic thoughts and moments, and it becomes my motivation to keep pursuing my art practice. This experience that reminds of Yves Klein’s blue. What is the significance of blue, it not only conveys the meaning of my first journey and exploration to the globe, but it means to ease my emotional and private memories in depth. Colour and painting have the power to help me through the hardships in my own life.
Afterwards, I also have many of my paintings and works which employed into blue elements, as for instance Both of us (Oil on canvas, 102 x 76cm, 2010) and Experience of traveling in Thailand (White lime and emulsion paint on the walls, Performance, 2010). In some works, I also utilized symbolic blue colour to indentify myself into the work, I love to employ blue to describe myself in my works, so I had made two self-portrait at my early artist career.
