Rooftop Series (2014-2015)
The ‘Rooftop Series’ (2014-2015), is about finding solace and space for reflection upon the rooftops of homes in Hong Kong and the United Kingdom.
When I began painting this series, it was based upon my experience in Hong Kong, wherein residents of its towering buildings could only find precious free space to explore the skies over the city by venturing to its rooftops. These residential rooftops not only help people gain a reprieve from their daily lives on the street level below but also served as a viewing platform for those wishing to view the skyline above the city's structures. The sky and Hong Kong’s surrounding hills served as a beautiful escape for me and those who ventured to the city's rooftops, as one could dream the days away looking up at the sky and imagining a world of possibilities.
When traveling to London (United Kingdom) in 2008, I was greeted by a huge sky by contrast, as the city's skyline was much lower by comparison (to Hong Kong). My experience here was one of longer nights, wherein a resident could view the night sky for eternity, finding in it the consciousness of self and using the time to pause and reflect on our actions and interactions with others throughout the day.
